Your Attitude Is Part Of The Job

By Tabitha Keith, Director of Programs, Heart for Winter Haven

A lot of people believe success is only about getting the job done.

Did you finish the task? Did you hit the deadline? Did you produce results?

Those things matter. But there is another part of work that often gets ignored, your attitude while doing it. You can technically complete the assignment and still damage the environment around you.

A bad attitude at work spreads fast. Complaining, disrespect, laziness, bitterness, gossip, arrogance, negativity, constant conflict, or treating people poorly can poison an entire workplace. Eventually, people stop trusting you, even if you are talented.

Skills may get someone hired. Character and attitude are often what determine whether they stay.

The Bible speaks directly to this. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23

Notice that Scripture does not only focus on the outcome of the work. It focuses on the heart behind the work. God cares about how we work, not just what we produce.

That means: Showing respect matters. Being teachable matters. Working with humility matters. Handling correction well matters. Serving others matters. Keeping integrity when frustrated matters.

A strong work ethic with a toxic attitude is still unhealthy.

Think about Joseph in the Bible. He worked in difficult environments, unfair situations, and under leaders who had power over him. Yet Scripture repeatedly shows that Joseph remained faithful, trustworthy, and honorable. His attitude became part of his witness.

Or think about Ruth. She did hard work in difficult circumstances, but she carried herself with humility, diligence, and kindness. Her attitude opened doors for favor and opportunity.

In today’s workplaces, attitude often matters more than people realize. Many employers will gladly train someone who is dependable, respectful, and eager to learn. But many struggle to keep employees who create constant tension, drama, or negativity.

The truth is, everyone has difficult days. Everyone gets tired. Everyone becomes frustrated sometimes. Having a positive attitude does not mean pretending life is easy. It means choosing integrity and maturity even when things are hard.

That is especially important in a culture where many people are overwhelmed, financially stressed, and emotionally exhausted. In Polk County alone, many households are living below the ALICE threshold, meaning they are working but still struggling to afford basic necessities.

Stress is real. Pressure is real. But attitude still matters because how we carry ourselves impacts the people around us.

At Heart for Winter Haven, this is one reason programs like Jobs for Life focus so heavily on character, relationships, and workplace culture, not just job placement. Jobs for Life teaches that being an ideal employee includes integrity, responsibility, humility, communication, and perseverance.

Because employment is not only about earning income. It is also about becoming the kind of person others can trust. A healthy attitude does not mean being perfect. It means being willing to grow.

It means: Owning mistakes instead of blaming others. Listening instead of always reacting. Choosing gratitude instead of constant complaining. Being quick to forgive. Showing up faithfully even when nobody notices. Treating people with dignity, even on hard days.

Your attitude is not separate from your work. It is part of your work. And often, the attitude you bring into the room says more about your character than your résumé ever will.

What kind of attitude do people experience when they work with you?
