Made to Flourish: What Does It Mean to Truly Live Well?

By Tabitha Keith, Director of Programs, Heart for Winter Haven

When God made the world, He said everything was good.
And when He made people, He said we were very good.

That means every person, every child, and every neighbor carries something special inside them. The Bible calls this the Imago Dei, the image of God. Because of that image, we were made not just to survive or even just to thrive, but to flourish.

Flourishing means living the way God designed life to be, in peace, in purpose, and in
relationship with one another.

Thriving or Flourishing... What’s the Difference?

The world tells us to thrive, to chase dreams, build comfort, and look out for ourselves. But flourishing is something different. It’s not about “me.” It’s about us.

When a single mom can pay rent and tuck her kids in at night without worry, that’s flourishing. When a young man at The Scholarship House finishes college and starts a meaningful career, that’s flourishing. When a neighbor finds healing through the Center for Well-Being, that’s flourishing.

Flourishing happens when everyone has what they need to grow, together.

Researchers at Harvard say people flourish when they have safety, strong friendships, good health, and hope for the future. The Bible says the same thing. It calls this shalom, everything working together in peace.

In the beginning, God’s garden was full of that peace. Everyone had enough. No one was left out. Even though sin entered the world and broke that peace, Jesus came to restore it. His work on the cross was an invitation to join Him in rebuilding the garden, to restore wholeness in our families, neighborhoods, and city.

When One Person Hurts, We All Feel It

Here in Winter Haven, many families are struggling to meet their most basic needs.
According to the United Way’s ALICE Report, almost half of Florida’s families (47%) work hard but still can’t afford the basics, rent, food, or child care. In Polk County, about 46% of households fall below that same line. Across the country, nearly 150,000 children were homeless on a single night last year, the highest number ever recorded.

These families aren’t lazy or broken. They’re doing everything right, but it’s still not enough.

You may not see another family’s suffering, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t affecting you. When one child goes to school hungry, the whole classroom feels it. When parents lose their housing, it changes the strength and safety of our city.

The Bible says that when one part of the body hurts, the whole body hurts (1 Corinthians 12:26). That means when our neighbors struggle, we all do. Flourishing begins when we understand that your well-being and my well-being are connected.

God’s Dream for Our City

In Scripture, God didn’t just tell His people to help the poor, He told them to make room for them. Farmers were told to leave the edges of their fields unharvested so everyone could eat. It wasn’t charity, it was community. It was love in action.

At Heart for Winter Haven, we believe God is still calling us to that kind of love, a love that makes room.

Through Faith & Finances, we see neighbors helping neighbors learn to manage money with dignity.
Through Jobs for Life, people find not just work, but purpose and confidence.
Through the Care Team and the Center for Well-Being, people find healing, stability, and hope.

And through it all, we’re working toward one big goal: ending childhood homelessness in Winter Haven by 2030.

It’s a big dream, but it’s not too big for God.

We Can’t Do This Alone

The Bible says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18).
If God draws near to people who are hurting, then we should too.

Flourishing doesn’t grow through quick fixes or handouts. It grows through relationships that bring hope and healing. It starts when we take time to listen, to pray, to care, and to share what we have.

Human flourishing doesn’t happen through programs alone. It happens through people. It happens through you.

When you show up, when you listen, when you give, when you care, you are joining God in His work to restore what’s broken.

Every child who finds a home, every dad who finds a job, every mom who finds peace, every volunteer who finds purpose, that’s a piece of God’s Kingdom coming alive right here in our city.

A Flourishing Winter Haven

Imagine a Winter Haven where every child has a safe bed, every parent has meaningful work, and every neighbor knows they belong. That’s God’s picture of human flourishing.

It starts with small steps:
Pray for families who are struggling.
Invite a friend to serve with you.
Give in ways that build relationships and restore hope.

You can take your next step today. Visit heart4wh.org to learn more about programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support families in need. Together, we can make room for hope and be part of God’s restoring work in our city.

When we live like this, everyone grows.
Because when one family flourishes, we all do.
